Variety broke the news that O’Shea Jackson Jr. (who memorably portrayed Ice Cube – his father – in the 2015 smash Straight Outta Compton) appears to be negotiations to join the upcoming monster flick Godzilla: King of Monsters for Warner Bros. The forthcoming spectacle has already attracted Emmy winner Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown. Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is directing the Legendary Pictures title from a script he co-wrote with Zach Shields.
While billed as a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, the film looks to be setting forth a different branch of connective tissue – though Ken Watanabe (who co-starred in the first film) is expected to return. More so, Godzilla: King of Monsters looks to further develop a universe outlined in Warner Bros.’ current hit Kong: Skull Island, with the expected (and perhaps inevitable) Godzilla vs. Kong set to follow (that feature is expected to hit screens on May 29, 2020.) Interestingly, Jackson’s Straight Outta Compton alums Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell both appeared in Kong: Skull Island.
Jackson’s role in the film is not yet specified but continues a body of work expanding from his Compton debut. He will appear in the Sundance comedy Ingrid Goes West (starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen) and is currently filming the crime drama Den of Thieves, due in theaters next year.
Godzilla: King of Monsters hits screens on March 22, 2019.
