On February 9, the 92nd Academy Awards hosted its “In Memoriam” segment featuring Grammy singer Billie Eilish, which paid homage to variety of actors, screenwriters, and crew members who passed away over the last year. Many familiar faces were featured in the memoriam including basketball star and 2018 Oscar winner Kobe Bryant and Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas. However, some viewers questioned why certain stars were not featured, including Luke Perry, Cameron Boyce, Tim Conway, Michael J. Pollard, and Peggy Lipton.
Perry’s exclusion was especially criticized as he made a cameo in this year’s Oscar-nominated film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. However, Perry and others were included in the Oscars website under the “In Memoriam” page.
On Monday morning, in response to the speculation, the Academy did release a statement regarding why some stars were televised and some weren’t: “The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam segment,” the statement read. “An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time. All the submissions are included on Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year. Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce are remembered in the Oscar.com gallery.”
