Oscars: 9 Advance to Next Round for Best Foreign Film Noms

Of 85 foreign films originally being considered, nine have advanced to the next round of voting for Best Foreign Film Oscar nominations.

Australia, Tanna, Bentley Dean, Martin Butler, directors;
Canada, It’s Only the End of the World, Xavier Dolan, director;
Denmark, Land of Mine, Martin Zandvliet, director;
Germany, Toni Erdmann, Maren Ade, director;
Iran, The Salesman, Asghar Farhadi, director;
Norway, The King’s Choice, Erik Poppe, director;
Russia, Paradise, Andrei Konchalovsky, director;
Sweden, A Man Called Ove, Hannes Holm, director;
Switzerland, My Life as a Zucchini, Claude Barras, director.

The short list of 9 will be reduced to 5 by invited committees in NY, L.A., and London.

Oscar nominations will be announced on January 24, 2017.

The 89th Academy Awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on February 26, 2017 and televised on ABC at 7pm ET/4pm PT.

Karen Earnest: A psychologist by profession, Karen was an early fan of movie musicals, sci-fi films, and black and white classics. She lives in Los Angeles County, where "the sun shines bright, the beaches are wide and inviting, and the orange groves (used to) stretch as far as the eye can see" (quoting Sid in L.A. Confidential)
