According to Variety, Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina) will star in The Garbo Network, a World War II thriller. The film follows the true story of spy Juan Pujol Garcia, who served as a double agent for Germany and England. Garcia is the only man in the history of World War II to receive both a German Iron Cross and the Member of the Order of the British Empire. His true allegiance was to the British. Along with MI5, he developed a fake network of spies supposedly spread out over the U.K. The deception helped the English deceive the Germans about the invasion of Normandy. Astonishingly, Garcia had absolutely no military or covert training, yet somehow persuaded both the Germans and the British to hire him as a spy.
The film’s script was written by William Wheeler and will be produced by Bob Cooper, Richard Saperstein, Chuck Weinstock, Jason Spire, and Isaac. Cooper said, “Juan Pujol Garcia is unlike any character we’ve seen on film. He’s a chameleon and a master manipulator, deeply haunted by his past, with an unreadable agenda… and his actions have world-changing consequences.”
Isaac appeared in last year’s Star Wars:The Force Awakens and will reprise his role as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. He has two other films in post-production: George Clooney’s comedy-crime mystery Suburbicon and Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Annihilation.
