Earlier this year, Marvel fans were a bit distraught when Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson left production of the upcoming sequel due to creative differences. However, things took a sudden turn for the better when it was announced that Sam Raimi, director of Evil Dead and original Spider-Man trilogy, was rumored to take his place. Fortunately during an interview with ComingSoon.net, Raimi made the announcement that he will officially direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
During the interview, Raimi stated that Doctor Strange was one of his top five favorite comic book characters. He was also quick to mention the short scene in Spider-Man 2 where they made reference to Strange’s name as a joke, during which J. Jonah Jameson’s assistant (played by Raimi’s brother Ted) offered it as a potential name for the film’s main antagonist, Doctor Octopus. When discussing that moment, he jokingly acknowledged that, “I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”
This boosts as incredibly promising for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as many still find that Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man movies- mostly the first two- hold up after eighteen years. Despite Scott Derrickson’s absence, fans are at least reassured that another talented director with Marvel movie experience will be directing the project. Plus, given that Raimi is also experienced with horror with his Evil Dead movies, and that Multiverse of Madness has been cited as Marvel’s first “scary” movie, it’s exciting to see what he’ll bring to the table. Hopefully, he can bring in Bruce Campbell as well.
