Official Release Date for ‘Jumanji 3’ is Revealed

After the surprising success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, fans have been waiting for Sony to announce the release date for the greenlit sequel. Mega-star Dwayne Johnson announced via Instagram that the official release date for Jumanji 3 is set for December 13, 2019.

With this new information on the release date, we know that the film will open just a week before the next Star Wars installment, Disney-LucasfilmsStar Wars Episode IX.

The sequel to Welcome to the Jungle, though still unnamed, brings back cast members Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Jake Kasdan is set to return as director, and Matt Tolmach is back to produce alongside the Seven Bucks Productions team.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle made a total of $404 million domestically and added another $557 million internationally. In an unusual turn of events, the film didn’t reach number one at the box office until its fifth weekend, staying in the top spot for the next three weekends.

The film is based on the 1995 classic Jumanji, starring Robin Williams. The 2017 film follows four students as they sit in detention together; when the delinquents are banished to the school basement, they discover a mystical video game that sends them on an out-of-body adventure inside the game, creating a lasting bond of friendship that carries into the real world. The plot of the sequel will likely follow a similar structure, though screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg will surely add some fresh twists to the formula.
