Bob Odenkirk may not be the actor many expected to star in John Wick–style action film, but it looks like the Better Call Saul star’s new movie Nobody is just that, and audiences seem to be enjoying it. The new low-budget revenge thriller from director Ilya Naishuller earned $6.7 million this weekend, topping the domestic box office charts.
The film follows a mild-mannered suburban dad who goes becomes a vigilante after his house is broken into. Nobody also stars Connie Nielson, Humberly Gonzalez and Christopher Lloyd.
Meanwhile, overseas, Godzilla vs. Kong went on rampage, earning $121 million from 28 countries during its opening. In China alone, the highly anticipated monster-movie took in $70.3 million over the course of three days. The film is set to release in the U.S. simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max as a part of Warner Bros.’ 2021 release plan March 31.
With more theaters opening in the U.S. and more movie-goers feeling comfortable enough to buy tickets, box office numbers are slowly climbing. It may be a while before domestic numbers look anything like the ones coming overseas, but things are looking better than they did in the latter half of 2020. It’s unclear if the hybrid release strategy will continue once conditions become safe enough for normal theatrical releases, but with many seemingly enjoying the ease of access to new films, studios may have a hard time going back to the old way of releases.
