As it turns out, Captain Marvel won’t be joining the first part of Avengers: Infinity War, and it looks like Brie Larson will not be among the large ensemble, which had up to thirty-two actors on site.
For fans of Carol Danvers, this may actually be good news rather than bad. Considering the jam-packed cast of the film (ranging from original Avengers members to old villains to the Guardians of the Galaxy), there hardly seems enough time to develop each of the characters in an organic and coherent way. By forgoing Captain Marvel in the film, it may allow the character more time and narrative space to progress on her own, without falling victim to the sort of poor character development which plagued characters in the Joss Whedon-helmed Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Additionally, considering the fact that the first Captain Marvel film is to be set in the 90’s, fans don’t know what may have happened to the titular character during the time frame in between the movie and part one of Infinity War. Keeping Captain Marvel separate from the Avengers film will lessen the chance of Marvel writing themselves into a corner.
Still, fans have been waiting long enough to finally see a female-led feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering the MCU first began putting out films in 2008, starting with Hulk and Iron Man, it does seem a bit ridiculous that people have had to wait eleven years before a woman could helm her own movie.
Fans will have to wait until March 8, 2019 for Captain Marvel to fly into theaters. Hopefully the MCU will not take as long to come out with more female-led films.
