The scope for the Avengers: Infinity War cast has widened even further. Scarlett Johansson (Lucy) has reported that one scene will boast around “thirty-two” cast members. While the film has made waves for the sheer volume of characters it will contain, up until there has been little exact information about how many will be en scene at a time. This also raises some speculation: will this be a part of a massive battle? The source material comics about Thanos and his search for the Infinity Gauntlet also involved a grand fight with an extensive list of characters, so it makes sense that the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: Civil War) would follow in its steps.
Scanning the cast list for returning members reveals many big names, a few among them being Tom Holland (The Lost City of Z), Chadwick Boseman (Get on Up!), Brie Larson (Room), Sebastian Stan (The Martian), Elizabeth Olsen (I Saw the Light), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Benicio del Toro (Sicario), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Beyond), Karen Gillan (Oculus), and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men). It’s estimated that around sixty big characters will appear in the film.
For many Marvel fans, however, this may prove more troubling than exciting. While Marvel’s first Avengers film offered up a strong ensemble flick, the sheer amount of characters in the next Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, did a clear disservice to the number of characters that it held in the narrative. The issue here is that it seems near impossible to provide a coherent and cohesive story (not to mention individual character arcs) for so many players in the story. That being said, it seems like everyone will be able to see the biggest and most ambitious connection between all the characters in the Marvel cinematic universe yet!
The first Avengers: Infinity War film will hit screens on May 4, 2018.
