The popular Nintendo character, Mario, is getting his own animated movie. The process is already underway, as Nintendo is currently in negotiations with Illumination Entertainment, according to Superhero Hype.
The last time Mario came to the big screen was in a live-action version in 1993. It featured a fairly impressive cast, ranging from names like Fiona Shaw to John Leguizamo to the late Bob Hoskins. The film also achieved not one but two nominations at the Saturn Awards in the categories of Best Makeup and Best Costumes as well. However, critics and fans alike weren’t too kind to the movie, giving it a far less positive brand of notoriety. Perhaps a transition from live-action to animation will preserve the original beloved reception of the games and counter some of the issues inherent in the 1993 movie.
So far, the next film will be co-produced by Chris Meledandri, who will represent Illumination, and Sigeru Miyamoto, who will represent Nintendo. Additionally, as far as logistics go, Universal Pictures is the parent of Illumination and thus distribution of the movie will be through their networks. The official Twitter account representing the red-hatted plumber and all of his companions also confirmed this news.
