Nicolas Cage Declares: “I Am a Goth” Following Preparation for Role as Dracula

Variety reports Nicolas Cage has graduated from playing a man convinced he is a vampire in 1989’s Vampire’s Kiss, to the head honcho vampire himself Dracula in the upcoming horror-comedy Renfield. The movie, set in modern-day, follows Dracula’s henchman in an insane asylum.

Most moviegoers know not to underestimate Cage’s ability to pull off one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time, but to those who question him, be assured he lives the goth lifestyle off camera. He revealed this side of his personality in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, even sharing his exploits as a parent to a crow, Hoogan.

According to Cage, “He has taken to calling me names…it’s comical, at least, it is to me. When I leave the room, he’ll say, ‘Bye,’ and then go, ‘Ass.’ Crows are very intelligent. And I like their appearance, the Edgar Allan Poe aspect. I like the goth element. I am a goth.”

This aspect of his personality partly explains his attraction to playing Dracula, but inspiration also came from James Wan’s 2021 horror romp, Malignant.

The Oscar winner explained to The Los Angeles Times, “I saw a movie called ‘Malignant’ and the director James Wan and the actress [Annabelle Wallis] created this choreography that was terrifying. So I’m hoping to do something like that where Dracula can either glide or move like Sadako in ‘Ringu.’”

Cage will star alongside Nicholas Hoult as the title character and Awkwafina.

Chris McKay (The Tomorrow WarThe Lego Batman Movie) will direct from a screenplay by Rick and Morty alum, Ryan Ridley. It is unclear if the movie will follow its source material, Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel, “Dracula.”
