New York movie theaters will be able to increase their capacity to 33% from 25% starting April 26th, as confirmed by Deadline. This is according to the new Covid-19 safety guidelines announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo. While New York theaters are gradually reopening theaters, California states that theaters are slated to open to full capacity in mid-June.
Along with this news, Gov. Cuomo also stated that museums and zoos in New York can move up to 50% capacity and starting May 19th, large indoor arenas can increase their capacity to 25%. This is due to the fact that New York’s rate of Covid-19 infection has gone down to 2.94%, which Cuomo said is the lowest it has been since last November. Total hospitalizations stand at 3,783.
Many movie theaters in New York have already been opening their doors back up, but they’ve needed to keep it at 25% capacity. New York City was an important place for Blockbuster films such as Godzilla vs. Kong. Bigger chain theaters such as AMC have stated that they can be profitable even with limited capacity. This is good news for the film and entertainment industry, as the closing of theaters have dramatically affected it.
