George Clooney and the Coen brothers have teamed up to produce what looks like one of the must subversive films of 2017 – Suburbicon. The new trailer features battered white-collared Matt Damon and Julianne Moore made-up to look like Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity. Set in picture perfect 1950s suburban community, Damon’s Gardner Lodge is pulled into the town’s seedy underbelly after losing his wife to a home invasion. Oscar Isaac co-stars as a noir-ish insurance claim investigator.
Directed by Clooney and penned by Joel and Ethan Coen, the film appears thought-provoking, boasting a satirical commentary critiquing 2017 while set in the 1950s. The trailer reflects common themes for the Coen brothers: the trials and tribulations of an everyman, the fragility of the nuclear family, and the ugliness of the American Dream. The Coen brothers have written and directed an astounding number of landmark features: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Burn After Reading. Clooney, on the other hand, previously directed the underrated Confessions of a Dangerous Mind; Good Night, and Good Luck; and 2014’s The Monuments Men.
With Clooney behind the camera, the actor-turned-director just might lead Damon and Moore to Oscar nominations.
The secrets of Suburbicon will be revealed on October 27.
