New Trailer for Daniel Radcliffe Rom-Com ‘What If’

In the new movie set to hit U.S. theaters on August 1st Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan will try to answer that age-old question of whether or not a man and woman can just be friends.  Radcliffe (Harry Potter, The Woman in Black) plays Wallace, a heartsick medical school dropout, who thinks he’s met the girl of his dreams in Kazan’s (Ruby Sparks) Chantry, only to be hit by that bombshell that has befallen so many guys – she has a boyfriend.

The boyfriend in question is played by Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Anonymous), who rounds out the cast with Mackenzie Davis (That Awkward Moment), Megan Park (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), and Adam Driver (Girls).   For Driver it’s the second trailer this week he’s been in, as his career has taken off in recent months, topped off of course by being cast in the new Star Wars movie now in production.  As for Radcliffe it’s the first romantic comedy he has starred in and another opportunity to try and cast a spell over audiences without the use of his trusty wand.  The movie was directed by Michael Dowse, who himself will be looking for a larger audience, having previously directed the commercially disappointing Take Me Home Tonight and the indie-comedy Goon.

The script by Elan Mastai (The Samaritan, Alone in the Dark) was popular in Hollywood circles, having made The Black List, an annual survey of development executives’ favorite screenplays.  It was produced independently before screening at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, where it was picked up for distribution by CBS Films (Last Vegas, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Radcliffe-starrer The Woman in Black).  For now it sounds like CBS’s plan is to release What If in a handful of theaters first, before expanding to other cities down the road.
