Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author of bestselling novels like Between the World and Me, The Beautiful Struggle, and The Water Dancer, is set to take the Man of Steel in a “powerful” new direction. The project, which is in early development, is being produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and will be a brand new take on the hero for DC Films and Warner Bros.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates said. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
The film won’t be Coates’ first work in the world of superheroes. He’s written for Marvel Comics on series like Captain America and Black Panther. Coates’ book Between the World and Me was adapted into an HBO film last year and his other book, The Water Dancer, is currently being adapted into a film with producers Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt attached.
“Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” said Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich. “We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”
