A new poster has been released for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the sequel to 2002’s surprise indie hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding which brought in $368 million worldwide on a budget of just $5 million.
The original cast is back in the sequel, which sees Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) now married and with a teenage daughter (Elena Kampouris) who is in the process of applying to faraway colleges to put some distance between herself and her smothering family. Meanwhile Toula’s parents, played again by Lainie Kazan (Pixels) and Michael Constantine (Back in 10) find out their longstanding marriage was actually technically never official due to their marriage certificate not being signed properly. Enter a Greek Wedding 2.
Other returning cast members are Andrea Martin (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb), Louis Mandylor (Hunted), and Gia Carides (This Isn’t Funny). New to the feature are John Stamos (TV’s Grandfathered), Alex Wolff (The Sitter), and Rita Wilson (TV’s The Good Wife). In addition, new helmer Kirk Jones (What to Expect When You’re Expecting) directs from a script by Vardalos, who was Oscar-nominated for penning the first film. Wilson, who was instrumental in bringing Vardalos’ one-woman play to the screen for the first film, along with Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, are again producing. HBO Films, and Gold Circle complete the same triumvirate of production companies behind the original.
Vardalos said of the new film, “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again.” She quipped, “One of these things is true.” She also stated “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story.”
Vardalos so far has not been able to match her success with the first film. A TV series, My Big Fat Greek Life, based on the same movie characters with returning stars Vardalos, Kazan, Constantine, Carides and Martin ran for 7 episodes in 2003 but the adventures of the Portakalos family did not drum up sufficient interest. The actress-writer has since both written and starred in Connie and Carla (2004) and I Hate Valentine’s Day (2009), which saw her re-team with Corbett. Neither film did well critically or commercially. She also penned the Tom Hanks directorial vehicle, Larry Crowne, which similarly tanked. Universal, which picked up distribution rights to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, is certainly hoping that Vardalos can once again charm her way into audience’s hearts.
