New Line Cinema is rebooting the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The project is still in early stages of development with no director or actor announced for the iconic killer Freddy Krueger.
New Line has brought on David Leslie Johnson (Orphan) to write the script. He also wrote 2011’s Red Riding Hood, and performed rewrites on The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist.
After a seven-film run from 1984 to 1994, Robert Englund came back as Freddy Krueger in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. They rebooted the franchise in 2010 with Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children) taking on the role of the mystical serial killer who was a previously known pedophile before the neighborhood’s parents burned him alive in his own home.
The reboot was a critical failure but a financial success, though it never got a sequel. The film was part of a wave of 70s and 80s reboots at the time that also included Rob Zombie’s Halloween films as well as a Friday the 13th remake.
We’ll have more on the project as it develops, as casting for the new Freddy Krueger will surely generate a lot of interest.
