A new Charlie’s Angels movie, based on the popular TV show which ran from 1976 to 1981, is reportedly in the works at Sony. This reboot is reportedly being written by Pete Chiarelli, best known for writing the romantic comedy The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, as well as the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians. Depending on the iteration, Charlie’s Angels follows a group of three women working for either a talent agency or a security firm, which doubles as a detective or spy agency.
This would be the third big-screen reboot of the television series. The first, released in 2000, was directed by MCG and starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu in the lead roles. That film was quite a success, grossing $291 million worldwide (approximately $493 million in today’s money). It received one sequel: Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, released in 2003. The second reboot was released in 2019, was directed by Elizabeth Banks, and starred Naomi Scott, Kristen Stewart, and Ella Balinska in the lead roles. The 2019 reboot didn’t do as well as the prior reboot, becoming a box office bomb, grossing only $73.3 million worldwide. A television reboot was attempted in 2011, but it was canceled after seven episodes.
This new Charlie’s Angels reboot is in very early development, so details about the film, such as the cast or a possible director, aren’t yet known.
