During the Super Bowl, Netflix dropped a surprise teaser for The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The film is set to be a follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino, who directed the latter.
In homage to the previews of 1970s Grindhouse films, the teaser begins with a screen that reads, “The special preview has been approved for all audiences by Bureau of Content Compliance.” It also features many of its more explicit content censored with scratches, with curse words bleeped out, and the same scratches covering the characters’ mouths. These are likely stylistic flourishes meant to get around the content restrictions imposed by showing the teaser live during the Super Bowl. The teaser also doesn’t feature a single title drop or a release date, aside from neon text that states “Coming Soon” at the very end, along with Netflix’s signature trademark.
Brad Pitt will star in the film as he reprises his role as Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Pitt will be joined by an ensemble cast featuring Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Holt McCallany, and Scott Caan. Timothy Olyphant is also said to be reprising his role as actor James Stacy from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Plot details about the film are largely being kept under wraps, but this teaser did give a look at the style and flair that Fincher and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt will be bringing to this world. The pair linked up on Fincher’s last film The Killer, which was also a Netflix project. All that is currently known about the film is that it it is set 8 years after Tarantino’s and it will center around Cliff Booth and his role as a Hollywood “Fixer”, helping out people in Hollywood with any issues that may arise.
The release date for The Adventures of Cliff Booth isn’t currently known, but it is planned for release this year. The teaser can be viewed below:
