According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has green-lit a sequel to its 2017 neo-noir supernatural thriller Death Note. Quoting the THR reveal, “Among properties it already owns, Netflix is developing a sequel to 2017’s horror-thriller Death Note, which Sarandos has called a “sizable” success, with Greg Russo writing the script.”
The first film starred Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, and Willem Dafoe. The story followed an American high school student, Light Turner (Wolff) who stumbles across a supernatural notebook, known as the “Death Note.” Turner is visited by a demonic Japanese god of death named Ryuk (voice and facial acting by Dafoe) who reveals the notebook’s secret; whoever’s name is written in the notebook will die. Under the alias “Kira,” Turner begins to judge who is morally unworthy of living, and kills them using the supernatural notebook. The FBI quickly makes it their top priority to discover the identity of the serial killer to stop him.
Although it was an apparent success for Netflix, the film also garnered a lot of criticism when it first released based around the whitewashing of the film’s protagonist.
Russo will be new to the franchise, as the screenplay for the first film was penned by Charles Parlapanides. No word yet if Adam Wingard will be attached to direct again. Casting has yet to be confirmed. The plot of the sequel is still under wraps, but hopefully will resolve the cliffhangers left by Death Note.
