Jon M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians is going into its third week at the number one spot of the summer box office.
The romantic comedy, originally based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same title, consists of an entirely Asian cast with both familiar and fresh faces to Hollywood including Fresh Off The Boat star Constance Wu, Hangover actor Ken Jeong, and British-Malaysian television host Henry Golding.
The movie tells the story of Chinese American economics professor Rachel Chu (Wu) who accompanies her long-time boyfriend Nick Young (Golding) to visit his wealthy family in Singapore.
The film, which initially had a $25.2 million box office prediction, reached at least $34 million over its five day opening. It has already acquired a domestic total of $110 million, and Variety reports that the film could make another $27 million to $30 million this Labor Day weekend, maintaining its spot as the number one movie in the nation. Not only is this considered a milestone for Asian American media, but this is also the first time any romantic comedy has topped the box office since 2014.
Netflix originally pitched the film a scheduled release, but the Crazy Rich Asians crew turned down the offer so that more audiences could support in theatres. This film has finally opened more doors for representation since Joy Luck Club’s release 25 years ago, and Warner Bros. has already agreed to work on a sequel to movie.
