Netflix Backs Away From Will Smith’s New Film ‘Fast and Loose’

Another headline with Will Smith’s name seems like the last thing the actor needs right now, but that’s what happens when you strike someone live from the Oscar’s.

In what is probably a historic first, the most recent winner for Best Actor is actually losing jobs rather than gaining offers. Days after Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures, stripping him of his role as a voting member, Netflix has decided to put some distance between their company and the actor.

Fast and Loose is an action film that was scheduled to star Smith, but reportedly this week the director David Leitch exited the project in favor of working on the new Ryan Gosling movie at Universal. At this moment it is unknown as to whether or not the film will continue once a new director is found or if a replacement for Smith will be sought out.

But will this be the only loss felt by Smith? The Netflix film is not the only project linked to Smith’s name at this time, including an Apple TV Plus production called Emancipation currently in post and suspected to be a front runner at awards shows in the coming year. The fallout of Smith’s Oscar debacle will only be told with time; if his actions will cost him work, an audience, or both.
