Major names Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore have been cast in the drama May December by Carol director Todd Haynes, with Samy Burch writing the script. May December goes as the following, Gracie Atherton-Yu (Moore) and her husband Joe (23 years her junior) are preparing for their twins to graduate from high school, twenty years after their scandalous tabloid romance captivated the nation. When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) visits the family to understand Gracie better, family relationships collapse under the pressure of the outside gaze.

“What so appealed to me about Samy Burch’s exceptional script was how it navigated potentially volatile subject matter with a kind of observational patience that allowed the characters in the story to be explored with uncommon subtlety,” said Haynes.

Haynes and Moore have worked together five times already, with May December being the sixth movie. Their fifth movie is an Apple Studios original documentary, The Velvet Underground, in the official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Moore is currently starring in the Apple Original Lisey’s Story and will be seen in the upcoming Universal musical adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen later this year.

Portman recently finished filming Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which Taika Waititi directed and which wrapped production this month.
