From Jane Schoenbrun, writer and director of 2024’s I Saw the TV Glow, comes a “new kind of horror remake” in the form of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. After premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to a 9-minute standing ovation, MUBI has released the official full length trailer Wednesday morning.
The trailer for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma sees young queer filmmaker Kris (Hannah Einbinder) as she is tasked to direct a reboot of the Camp Miasma horror franchise. a long-running series that satirizes slasher IPs like Friday the 13th.
“I don’t wanna make another dumb sequel in the Camp Miasma franchise. I don’t wanna make a remake of a remake of a remake. I wanna make something that feels fresh and new,” Kris says in the trailer. When visiting the shooting location of the original Miasma film, she encounters actress Billy Preston (Gillian Anderson) the franchise’s original final girl, who resides at the abandoned camp. “Someone’s gotta be here when Little Death comes back,” Billy explains, referencing the supernatural slasher villain of the franchise. “If you’ve seen his movies, you know he always comes back,” Billy adds before laughing maniacally. The trailer develops by showcasing the two women draw closer together as the secrets and history of Camp Miasma begin to surface.
The visuals presented in the trailer pay homage to 80s inspired cinematography, which couples with director Jane Schoenbrun’s recurring surrealist style. Schoenbrun revealed in an interview with Deadline “I felt that the thing that I really needed to do was something that was in a more classical and playful, kind of almost like a ‘golden era of cinema’ style…I remember being like, ‘It is very important in the very first scene of the movie that there’d be a huge f*cking geyser of blood.’”
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma releases in theaters on August 7, 2026. Watch the trailer here.
