With the box office in a freeze over the last few months, theaters need a hero to make a comeback. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is expected to be that hero. So far, it is proving to at least begin the thawing process that will get movie theaters back in business, as the film opened with $54 million international debut.
Now that the film is landing stateside, more theaters are opening for the first time in the hopes that audiences will fill seats to see Tenet. AMC announced that they will be opening theaters another 140 theaters on September 4, including in the San Diego area of California, which until now has been off limits for theater openings.
Regal also announced that more locations will be opening in California, Maryland, and New Jersey. The key California markets of Los Angeles and San Francisco remain closed, but Sonora, San Diego, and El Dorado county theaters will be allowed to open to audiences.
The film is also getting several special 70mm on film screenings in the US, as it was shot in the IMAX 70mm format and is intended to be screened that way. The special 70mm IMAX screenings so far will only be happening in Indianapolis and Fort Lauderdale, but regular IMAX screenings will be happening across the country.
