In the early 2000’s the world was plagued by sequels, prequels, and even midquels of classic Disney animated movies. Some of these movies are remembered fondly by fans, but most of the movies are pretty forgettable. Eventually Disney gave up on making sequels, and the company instead began focusing on creating live action remakes of their animated movies. These live action remakes have been really successful for Disney, and the remake of The Lion King made over a billion dollars internationally alone.
Now according to Deadline Disney is planning on making a sequel to this new version of The Lion King. The sequel will be directed by Barry Jenkins, who wrote and directed the Oscar winning movie Moonlight. Jenkins also wrote and directed the movies If Beale Street Could Talk and Medicine for Melancholy. Writer Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the script for the first movie, is returning as the writer for this sequel.
Not much is known about this new movie as of right now except that it is not and adaptation of The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, but instead it will be more like a prequel and focus on the early life of Simba’s father Mufasa. While this does sound interesting it might have been cool to see reimagined version Simba’s daughter Kiara and her love interest Kovu.
