Minions & Monsters, the third entry in the Minions series and the seventh installment in the larger Despicable Me franchise, did not meet box office expectations this July 4th weekend. Despite achieving an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes (the highest of the franchise), the film made a mere $36 million domestically over the long weekend. It was projected to earn $80 million during the 4th of July weekend, meaning it fell quite short. This is lower than even the original Despicable Me in 2010, which made $57 million in its first weekend.
The film currently sits at around $175 million worldwide. While it will likely still be profitable, it will certainly make less than Universal and Illumination hoped. While fatigue towards the Minions may be a factor, the popularity of Toy Story 5 was likely the main culprit. The film earned $31 million during its third weekend, just barely being beaten by the Minions in their opening weekend. Toy Story 5 has already made over $770 million at the global box office.
Minions & Monsters still has the potential to perform well as the summer continues. However, major tentpole releases such as Moana, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day all release this month, so the Minions may have trouble keeping up.
