Marvel Studios is transitioning its highly anticipated Nova comic book adaptation into a feature film. Writer and producer Michael Waldron has officially signed on to develop the project, with plans to write the screenplay and potentially direct the film if it proceeds into active production.
The news follows recent industry speculation that arose after a Writers Guild of America (WGA) card leak listed the project among Waldron’s upcoming creative credits. The cosmic character’s transition to the big screen represents a major shift in strategy for Marvel Studios. The studio previously spent several years developing the intellectual property as a streaming television series for Disney+ with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada, but those plans were ultimately shelved in 2025 as part of a broader corporate realignment of Marvel’s television output.
First introduced in Marvel Comics’ The Man Called Nova #1 in 1976, the hero, traditionally depicted as a human teenager named Richard Rider, gains superhuman strength, flight, and resilience after inheriting the powers of a dying alien officer from the intergalactic military force known as the Nova Corps. While the character has interacted with various corners of the Marvel universe, his comic history features major conflicts with the Skrulls, who recently served as focal points in the films Captain Marvel and Secret Invasion. The Nova Corps themselves were previously introduced to audiences in James Gunn’s 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Waldron holds deep creative ties to both Disney and Marvel Studios. He served as the creator and showrunner for the first season of the Disney+ series Loki and wrote the screenplay for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He is also attached as a writer on upcoming crossover events like Avengers: Doomsday.
Beyond his comic book portfolio, Waldron is the creator of the Starz wrestling drama series Heels and recently completed production on the second season of the upcoming Hulu sports-comedy series Chad Powers, which stars Glen Powell. He operates through his production company, Anomaly, which maintains an overall development deal with Disney. The Nova feature remains in early development, and Marvel Studios has not yet announced a casting search or an official theatrical release date.
