For years, filmmaker Michael Mann has been attempting to get biopic off the ground on the life of Enzo Ferrari, Italian race car wizard and founder the the venerable Ferrari car line. The long-gestating project hit snag recently when Oscar winner Christian Bale, for a time rumored to take the driver’s seat in the headlining role, bowed out of the project. Ferrari may ride again though, as Deadline reports that Hugh Jackman, currently on a Logan victory tour, may join the project alongside the original The Girl with Dragon Tattoo Noomi Rapace.
Ferrari has been a passion project for some time for Mann, who earned Oscar nominations for producing, directing and co-writing the 1999 docudrama The Insider and most recently helmed the Chris Hemsworth-led thriller Blackhat. Reportedly, the project began nearly 17 years ago in a partnership between Mann and late director Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa) and centers on Ferrari’s whirlwind a life both personally and professionally in 1957. Rapace, if she does join the project, will portray Ferrari’s estranged wife Linda. Mann wrote the screenplay as well. If plans move as hoped, Ferrari may be looking for a summer 2018 production start.
Jackman is currently on a professional high considering the critical and commercial success for the currently-in-theaters Logan, his reported final bow as Wolverine. The Oscar-nominated actor (for 2012’s Les Misérables) will next hit screens as P.T. Barnum in Michael Gracey’s musical bio The Greatest Showman. That film co-stars Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), Rebecca Ferguson (Florence Foster Jenkins), Zac Efron (The Paperboy) and forthcoming Spider-Man pal Zendaya. Rapace will next be seen in Alien: Covenant, reprising her role from Prometheus as well as David Ayer’s upcoming Bright alongside Will Smith.
