In its third week of circulation, the film adaptation of the Broadway play Mean Girls still rules the box office. The lack of new releases also helps to cut down any chance it could face competition.
Over the quiet weekend, Mean Girls looks to go home with $6.7 million and pass $60 million domestically by the weekend’s close. As stated, Mean Girls is based on the Broadway musical, which was, in turn, adapted from the 2004 cult classic of the same name. Helmed by Samatha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., the film has become a massive success over the generally slow month of January.
As Variety points out, general theater-going business is close to a standstill, with no big releases to mark this weekend. However, some Oscar nominees have returned to theaters, adding their overall gross. The most lucrative of the bunch is Poor Things and American Fiction. Poor Things is looking at a jump of 32% this weekend, with American Fiction looking at a 43% increase.
Also returning to theaters is Best VFX nominee Godzilla Minus One. This time, the film was transferred to black and white, paying homage to the 1954 classic that kicked off the franchise, Gojira.
Coming in second for the weekend is The Beekeeper, adding $6.4 million to its bottom line. It looks to cross $40 million come Sunday night. Third place goes to Wonka, still strong in its seventh week of circulation. If the numbers hold, it’ll surpass $200 million stateside before it leaves theaters.
Fourth goes to Illuminations Migration, pushing itself past the $100 million mark. Anyone But You, Sony’s new romcom headlined by Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, earned fifth place. Adding shy of five million to its total, the film will push past 70 million by the end of the weekend.
