In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Damon revealed that he had a female stunt performer double for him in key shots in the Laestrygonian warriors sequence of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Damon explained that the double was used to utilize a practical forced-perspective effect, using shorter doubles for him and the rest of Odysseus’s crew to make the 7-foot-tall stunt performers playing the Laestrygonian warriors look larger, without the aid of CGI. Here’s his full explanation:
When we did the forced perspective stuff of the Laestrygonians — I don’t know if there’s been a thing about how we did it — there were these stunt men who were all seven feet [playing the Laestrygonian Warriors].
In his explanation, Damon also shouted out the physique of the stunt woman who ended up doubling for him as Odysseus, saying,
And then they got stuntmen who were under five feet, and so my double was a woman, a female stunt performer, who had the greatest arms I’ve ever seen.
He also goes on to explain how it all turned out in the finished film, saying:
So there are those shots in the movie where you see these giants looming over me, and so it was almost 100 percent my arms in the movie, but you gotta give it up where it’s due.
