Mary, Queen of Scots very recently released a promotional image showing Saoirse Ronan as the widowed queen of France and true Scottish queen Mary Stuart, and two new actors have now joined her in the cast, according to Variety. David Tennant (Doctor Who, How to Train Your Dragon) and Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential, The Hurt Locker) have been added to the historical drama, but their roles are currently unknown.
The story is based on John Guy’s biography My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots and will focus on Mary Stuart, a Scottish princess who became queen of France at the age of 16. After being widowed within two years of her queenship, she decides to return to Scotland in an attempt to regain the throne, where she must face off against the queen of Great Britain, Elizabeth I, who is played by Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street).
Josie Rourke will be making her feature film directorial debut, with a script written by Beau Willimon (House of Cards, Ides of March). Producers include Working Title members Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Debra Hayward, who all were nominated for an academy award for Les Miserables. The film currently does not have a release date, but we expect a mid-to-late release in 2018.
Tennant just finished up his last season of the hit show Broadchurch and will soon be seen in the second season of Jessica Jones and in films You, Me, and Him and Bad Samaritan. Pearce was last seen in Alien: Covenant and will soon appear in The Catcher Was a Spy with Paul Rudd. Mary, Queen of Scots is currently filming across the pond.
