Update: Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ Scores 63% in Early Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Now Lowest of Any MCU Film

Eternals is a little over a week away from being released to the public but a small number of critics had the chance to get the first glimpse and tell us a few things about the new ambitious Marvel project.

Chloe Zhao takes the spotlight even though her work is behind the camera. Every movie critic reassures that her authentic filmmaking is something new and refreshing to the world of Marvel movies that we have become so accustomed to.

In Awards Daily writer Frank J. Avella’s words, “Thank the cine-gods that Chloe Zhao was able to take all those innocuous prerequisites and create a film that is gorgeously photographed and focusing on the intimate moments between characters allowing them to breath.”

However, it is well kept within the lines of what is expected of a Marvel superhero movie with its typical humorous comebacks and greatly exaggerated world-destroying nemesis. Film critic Clint Worthington from The Spool rightfully wonders why make a whole new line of superheroes when Marvel has already bought the X-Men franchise with the 2019 deal with Fox. He writes, “For a film about millennia-old space gods with X-Men powers… Eternals feels pedestrian, it flashes of naturalism still drowned in the usual Feige trappings.”

With a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, the new Marvel flick has strongly contrasting reviews for now. For many, Chloe Zhao’s direction is the best part of the film and helps put the MCU in completely new direction. Whilst for other critics like The New York Post’s Johny Oleksinski, ‘Eternals’ is “One of Marvel’s worst movies so far”.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus almost perfectly encapsulates the early reaction, saying “An ambitious superhero epic that soars more often than it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing — and occasionally confounding — new direction.”

Eternals is set to hit cinemas on November 5, 2021, after many delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
