While Marvel scrambles to get Ant-Man back on track in time for its 2015 release, Doctor Strange appears to be on schedule. An exclusive from Variety says that Scott Derrickson will helm the film starring the one and only Sorcerer Supreme. Kevin Feige will produce, Thomas Dean Donnelly, and Joshua Oppenheimer will write the screenplay.
Doctor Stephen Strange is a highly skilled neurosurgeon until an accident crushes his hands. Strange exhausts his fortune searching for a way to restore his hands. Eventually Strange comes across a mystic hermit called The Ancient One who takes him on as a student. Doctor Strange learns to fighting supernatural threats with his magic.
As a director, Scott Derrickson has thus far proven himself with horror films. He first made his mark in 2005 when he wrote and directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose. In 2012 he wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed Sinister, which made over $85 million on a $3 million budget. Marvel Studios has taken some heat over the departure of Edgar Wright with some speculating that the producers are attempting to homogenize the films, though hiring Derrickson would suggest otherwise. Just as Marvel hired Kenneth Branagh, known for his Shakespeare adaptations, to direct a movie about Norse Gods and Joe Johnston, known for period films like The Rocketeer and October Sky, to direct a World War II action film, Derrickson has likely been called in to add a sinister edge to Doctor Strange.
No release date has been announced and the lead role has not been cast at this time.
