Disney Enlists Bill Condon To Direct Live-Action ‘Beauty And The Beast’

Disney’s Maleficent just took a huge bite out of the box office this past weekend, and the movie studio is getting ready to adapt another of its beloved animated box office crowns into a live-action film, namely 1991’s Beauty And The Beast. To help ensure its critical and financial success, Disney has turned to Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part I & II director, Bill Condon.

With Marvel Studios under its wing, Disney seems driven like no other studio to bring exciting and, more importantly, profitable entertainment to the masses. We can only guess which of the other animated successes they’ll turn to next after Beauty And The Beast. How about The Lion King? A few years ago, we might have balked at the possibility, but with today’s motion capture technology and guys like Andy Serkis, it just might be possible.

For the latest live-action re-telling of the famous cursed beast who somehow, despite the odds, earns the love of a beautiful young woman, Condon seems to be a smart choice: each of the last two Twilight films made boatloads of money.

No news yet on who will be starring in Disney’s re-telling of Beauty And The Beast. Serkis has our vote for the beast role.

Next up for Condon is his film A Slight Trick Of The Mind starring Ian McKellen as an aged Sherlock Holmes. The film is currently in pre-production.
