Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Zoe Saldana debuted the first trailer for the final installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. The duo presented the trailer to a crowd at CCXP22 in Brazil.
The trailer begins with Chris Pratt‘s Peter Quill standing on the bridge of new and larger ship, with a voiceover stating, “We’ve been gone a while.” Their ship is then seen flying over a bay and neighborhood that appear to be on Earth. The ship then lands in an ordinary Earth neighborhood, with Quill’s voiceover confidently stating, “But whatever happens, the galaxy still needs its guardians.” However, as the Guardians leave the ship, they are greeted by people with animal features, including a goat man, a person with bat features, and a little girl with a cat face who drops a ball hoping to play with Dave Bautista‘s Drax. Unsurprisingly, Drax picks up the ball and throws it as hard as he can at the little girl, knocking her on her back. Next, the locals start throwing items at Peter, causing Drax to laugh, until he is hit in the face himself.
The trailer transitions to Peter looking into the distance with melancholy. A voiceover of Pom Klementieff‘s Mantis implores someone off-screen, asking that they “Don’t forget where we came from.” Mantis’ monologue is intercut with images of young Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, watching a hand grab at him inside a cage.
The trailer next showcases our first look at Zoe Saldana‘s Gamora, holding Polaroid picture. The Guardians are next shown in multicolored space suits jumping out of an airlock and towards an organic Cronenberg-looking megastructure, which is coupled with a voiceover from Quill, stating that the group has been running their whole lives. The Guardians are then seen walking through fiery wreckage, with Karen Gillan’s Nebula carrying Quill in her arms. Finally, rocket, standing amongst the flames, proclaims, “Pete, I’m done running,” then cocks his gun.
Next, we see Chukwudi Iwuji‘s High Evolutionary, decked out with cybernetics on the back of his head, evaluating woman with white hair running in a circular path reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey. This scene is intercut with a scene showing Gamora and Mantis holding an injured Drax, with monsters stalking Quill and the rest dressed in orange jumpsuits. The group is next shown humorously jumping across the Cronenberg planetoid’s surface, similar to how the astronauts walked on the moon.
Rocket is then seen on the ground, stating in delirium, “We’ll all fly away together, one last time, into the forever beautiful sky.” This is intercut with scenes of Quill and Root running away from the group’s crashing ship and Nebula gleefully cheering amongst a crowd and neon lights. However, Nebula’s cheerful demeanor is contrasted when we are next shown a bloody scalpel and Quill screaming in pain, connected to hoses of some kind. Rocket is then seen warmly embracing an otter he must have known before meeting the Guardians. The trailer then cuts to the group running down a dark hallway, only to be stopped by a gigantic monster.
Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, finally makes his long-awaited first appearance since being teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, brutally punches Nebula into the ground. Rocket is then seen in an ethereal plane of existence, surrounded in white with vague outlines of buildings in the background. Finally, we see bulked-up Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, standing back to back with Quill exclaiming, “We are Groot!” while shooting guns with multiple arms.
Finally, the trailer ends with a humorous exchange between Quill and Drax, debating how many people Drax will kill.
Marvel released a press release detailing what we can expect from the film once it is released:
“In Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
The film releases on May 5, 2023. Stick with mxdwn for a trailer breakdown and more news about the Guardians of the Galaxy.
