Marvel Explores The World Of Animation In Upcoming Disney+ Series

With the launch of the new MCU phase, Marvel has begun using novel techniques for their upcoming Disney+ series. Their first notable example, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be the upcoming What If…? series, a number of animated stories based on the 1970s comic of the same name. That comic examined hypothetical alternate realities that deviate from the main iconic Marvel storylines, this time playing out in the context of the MCU world. An alien named Uatu The Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) will narrate these stories, with past comics discussing events such as “What If Spider-Man had Joined the ‘Fantastic Four’?” and “What If Iron Man Had Been a Traitor?”.

While the upcoming series will be mainly based on the MCU, it’s possible that ideas will be drawn from the comics themselves. One upcoming episode on the digital platform, for example, will see Hayley Atwell return as the voice of Agent Peggy Carter in a world where she became a super soldier rather than Steve Rogers. A similar character appeared in the recent Exiles comic series.

The cast for the What If?… was announced during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con and will feature many acting veterans from the MCU. Fans should look forward for this series when it premieres during summer 2021.
