After the release of Avengers: Endgame, the landscape of the MCU has been very different compared to what came before. With many recent projects, such as Loki or Spider-Man: No Way Home, focusing on the multiverse, there’s also been a noticeable absence of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff.
The events of Avengers: Endgame saw both heroes lay down their lives so the entire universe could live a safe and Thanos-free life. And, as ComicBook.com points out, both deaths had a definite finality.
According to Variety, however, Marvel has been discussing the possibility of getting the original crew back for a new Avengers film, which would have them work at “reviving Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.”
It’s important to point out, as well, that Johansson hasn’t been entirely detached from the MCU since 2019’s Endgame. 2021 saw the release of the Black Widow solo film, and on top of that, Johansson confirmed with ComicBook.com that her producing project for Marvel is still in the works.
While fans would love to see both characters return, both actors would come with a very hefty price tag. Both were taking home eight-figure profits in the latter days of their stint in the MCU, and Robert Downey Jr. earned $25 million upfront for Iron Man 3 alone, which came out six years before Endgame.
While 3 of the original 6 Avengers are still alive and in a similar state as they were during the Infinity Saga, there is still plenty of room for speculation as to how Iron Man and Black Widow could return, and even room for speculation if Captain America could come back as well.
Many post-Endgame films that dealt with the multiverse showed that there are nearly infinite possibilities for what audiences could see, leaving multiple avenues for Marvel to take if the characters are brought back.
