Marvel Director Taika Waititi Attached to Animated ‘Flash Gordon’ Film

After directing one of Marvel’s most well received and creative films with Thor Ragnarok, Taika Waititi has begun attaching his name to various upcoming projects. Now the director has a new project on hand, this time being a new adaptation of the famous comic series Flash Gordon. Not only that, but this upcoming Flash Gordon Reboot will be Animated at 20th Century Fox, who is also now an affiliate of Disney.

Rumors of a new Flash Gordon film have been surfacing for years, with the character being very well known for his comic strips and 1930s film serials. The character did make a return with a 1980 movie starring Sam Jones as the title character, but was met with poor box office results at the time. Since then, however, the film has received a huge cult following and is best known for its 80s camp value and soundtrack by Queen.

With the 80s film being the last we saw of Flash Gordon, it’s ultimately time for the character to make a comeback. It’s currently unknown whether Waititi will have a role in this film in addition to being a director. Regardless, with a talent like him attached and seeing how Thor Ragnarok had a Flash Gordon feel to it, it’ll be welcome to see Waititi work on something up his ally. Add in the fact that this upcoming reboot will be animated, and it’ll certainly make for one neat return of Flash Gordon. Now hopefully Queen’s soundtrack will be in the mix too.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
