Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the studio’s plans for its upcoming superhero slate at an event for press and fans held today at Hollywood’s historic El Capitan Theater. Chief among the surprises – the upcoming third Avengers movie will be split into two films.
Plenty of other news was revealed during Feige’s presentation, including release dates for some much-anticipated films. Captain America: Civil War, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo back at the helm, is set to hit theaters on May 6th, 2016. Dr. Strange, to be directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister), has been pushed to November 4th, 2016 instead of the original July 2016 date, reportedly due to difficulties in pinning down lead. As we covered yesterday, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) is in talks for the title role.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2, with James Gunn set to return as director, is slated for a May 5th, 2017 release. Thor 3: Ragnarok follows as a summer tentpole, hitting theaters on July 28th, 2017.
Perhaps the studio’s most anticipated title is Avengers: Infinity War, which the studio plans to break into 2 films. Part 1 has a release date set for May 4th, 2018, to be followed by Part 2 in May 2019.
