It’s official: after several weeks of speculation, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) has signed on to DC Comics’ Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn, according to Collider. Quinn, originally introduced in Batman: The Animated Series as the Joker’s girlfriend and sidekick, has since become her own anti-hero entity. Born Harleen Quinzel, she is a former psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, who after studying the twisted brain of The Joker, becomes mesmerized and joins his crusade.
Beyond her physical crime-fighting abilities and her vixen demeanor, she has essentially weaponized her intelligence and wit. It is still unknown in what capacity she will serve the supervillain team, but with casting rumors floating around that place Jared Leto (Dallas Buyer’s Club) as The Joker, the potential rapport between these two actors already makes for an exciting film. Robbie’s performance in The Wolf of Wall Street as Jordan Belfort’s brazen and sensual wife makes her casting as Quinn all the more appropriate.
For the moment, the rest of the Suicide Squad has yet to be officially locked in, with actors Tom Hardy (Inception), Will Smith (After Earth), and others still in talks. The David Ayer (Fury) film has ample time however, until its August 5, 2016 release date, to affect some more similarly perfect casting decisions.
In the meantime, Robbie will be busy promoting Focus, thriller co-starring Smith, as well as filming the Tina Fey comedy The Taliban Shuffle. Additionally, her role as Jane in David Yates’ Tarzan, set for a July 1, 2016 release, should cement her as the girl of the summer.
