Fresh off his latest horror-thriller Old, M. Night Shyamalan’s next film for Universal Pictures has received its title, Knock at the Cabin, now set for release on Friday, February 3rd 2023, a two-week extension from its previous date, as reported by Bruce Haring of Deadline.
The director of notable psychological thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village, has teased his large following over the years with upcoming projects. For instance, he did this for Glass, the third instalment of his trilogy which also features Unbreakable and Split. “The next one. On third draft. Super tight. Under a 100 pages,” reads his alluring tweet from last August with a picture of an unlabelled binder which allegedly held the Knock at the Cabin script.
Shyamalan’s work had been receiving fairly mixed-to-negative reactions after the blockbuster success of 2002’s Signs, and although he continued to write and direct commercially successful films, it wasn’t until The Visit when he regained wide critical acclaim. His latest, Old, which follows the one-two punch of the completion of his bizarre Unbreakable trilogy, which once again split critics and audiences alike. Some embraced the campy, Twilight Zone-style premise while others pointed out the spotty dialogue and unanswered questions.
We’ll have to wait and see how his next picture turns out, but regardless of its quality it is worth noting how Shyamalan has made his name off original screenplays, with fully realized ideas that stand out. He even reinvented the comic book genre, which may come as a surprise for some, given his horror-thriller sensibilities, which he continues to carry over with a title like Knock at the Cabin for his next feature.
