Critically acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay has been tapped to direct Village Roadshow Pictures’ new psychological horror based on Stephen King’s 1999 novel, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Production on the film is set to begin next year, with Ramsay co-writing the script alongside I Am Not Okay with This co-creator Christy Hall.
The story follows 12-year-old Trisha McFarland who, while hiking along a branch of the Appalachian Trail with her brother and recently divorced mother, strays from the path and finds herself lost and alone. A huge fan of Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tom Gordon, Trisha clings to her portable radio and listens to baseball games while fantasizing about her hero coming to save her. However, in addition to the natural hazards she faces, something dangerous may be tracking her through the dark woods.
Ramsay’s last film, You Were Never Really Here, starred Joaquin Phoenix in the leading role. It received high praise from critics, earning certified fresh critic score of 89% with 278 total reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Phoenix won the Best Actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for his performance, and the film earned nomination for Outstanding British Film of the Year at the 2019 BAFTA awards.
