Lord and Miller Animated Film ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’ Sells to Netflix

Sony Pictures has sold the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) animated feature film The Mitchells vs. The Machines, previously known as Connected to Netflix. Netflix plans to revert the film’s name to its original title when the streaming service releases it this year. The film was scheduled for a 2020 theatrical release, but that plan was scrapped when the pandemic came, so Sony hit the brakes and put it on the back burner for the time being, that is, until Netflix acquired.

The film is directed by Mike Rianda and co-directed by Jeff Rowe, and it follows the challenge of a regular family to communicate as technology is growing around the world. When Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson), an artistic outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her aspirations to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (Danny McBride) insists that the entire family should drive Katie to school together and bond one last time. Rianda and Rowe also wrote the screenplay.

The voice cast also includes Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids), Eric Andre (Bad Trip), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls), Blake Griffin, and Doug the Pug.

Lord and Miller released a statement in response.

“We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm Netflix has expressed for this movie with this acquisition and grateful to everyone at Sony for making a great picture with us and finding a big way to bring it to audiences. We’re really proud of the film we all made together, plus we understand our subscription fees are waived in perpetuity as part of the deal? We’re not lawyers, but it does sound right to us.”
