Lola Kirke and Greta Gerwig Both Come-of-Age in the ‘Mistress America’ Trailer

In writer-director Noah Baumbach‘s Mistress America, a New York undergrad’s life goes topsy-turvy after meeting and befriending her soon-to-be older stepsister. Emerging actress Lola Kirke (Gone Girl) plays said undergrad and is joined by Baumbach’s Greenberg and Frances Ha star, Greta Gerwig. Matthew Shear (While We’re Young) also stars. The film premiered earlier this year at Sundance, where it was picked up by Fox Searchlight.

The film looks as though it fits in perfectly with Baumbach’s career-long themes and ideas surrounding growing up and learning to act one’s age. Although about a decade apart in age, the two women in Mistress America will both deal with these issues. This is Baumbach’s second film this year after the moderately well-received While We’re Young, which starred Gerwig’s Greenberg co-star Ben Stiller and focused on a middle-aged couple attempting to reclaim their youth. With Gerwig acting as co-writer on the screenplay, hopefully Mistress America will surpass the success of WWY and meet the standards of her former critically praised co-write Frances Ha.

Based on the trailer, Gerwig seems to be right in her element of awkward comedy, dishing out sufficient levels of charm while sharing the screen with on-the-rise actress Kirke. Mistress America will hit theaters on August 13.
