Larry Kasanoff”s Threshold Entertainment is planning a live action version of the 80’s classic videogame Tetris. Threshold, having previously ventured into big screen adaptations of games with Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, is hoping for some newfound success in the genre.
Tetris, the video game featuring interlocking colored blocks the user maneuvers for points, was originally released in June 1984, giving millions of office workers something to kill time with when their bosses weren’t looking. It was bundled in 1989 with the launch of Nintendo’s original portable gaming system, Game Boy.
Despite the questionable success of such game-based titles as 2012’s Battleship, Kasanoff sees potential in Tetris as a live action vehicle, and has officially partnered with the Tetris Company to bring it to the big screen. At this point, there is no talent or director attached, but Kasanoff insists a story is in place. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kasanoff states “Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind Tetris which makes it a much more imaginative thing.”
No release date has been announced.
