Let’s get down to business and talk about Disney‘s live action remake of Mulan, which was originally planned to be released in November of 2018, and then March of 2020. But with the COVID-19 pandemic putting everything on hold, audiences have yet to see the new Mulan. Now they won’t have to wait much longer, as Disney has announced that Mulan will be released onto Disney+ on September 4, exactly one month from now.
Disney+ has seen an uptick in subscribers since the stay-at-home initiative began, and especially since the platform added the official Hamilton recording with the original cast to its long list of content. Mulan will be available starting at a premium fee of $29.99, according to Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
For those concern that Disney+ is going to start gouging their subscribers, Chapek says that Disney is “looking at Mulan as a one-off” and that it isn’t intended to be a new business model that Disney plans on carrying out. This fee is most likely for the purpose of making up the ticket sales Disney would’ve earned from a wide release in theaters, as live-action Disney remakes have proven to be a cash cow for the company.
However, in countries where Disney+ is unavailable and theaters are starting to reopen, Disney is planning to release Mulan theatrically, namely China. It is undetermined whether other upcoming Disney titles such as Black Widow or Jungle Cruise will be released on Disney+ or wait for theaters to reopen widely for a traditional release.
