Disney’s strategy of adapting their most famous animated movies into live-action films seems to be paying off. According to Deadline, the live-action Aladdin adaptation has made over 100 million dollars in its opening weekend. Its success has surpassed Disney initial expectations. Aladdin was released in the United States on Memorial weekend. The movie was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and most notably Will Smith as the Genie.
Initially, when the all the trailers and advertisements for Aladdin came out, people were critical of both the Genie’s appearance and whether Will Smith could replace the late Robin Williams. Williams’ performance as the Genie, for many people, was synonymous with the animated movie’s success and soon became a fan-favorite amongst Disney characters. However these apprehensions have not affected the movie’s financial success.
The success of Aladdin and other live action remakes might motivate Disney to continue this trend with their animated films. In fact, it has just been announced that a live action remake of Snow White is in the works, which will follow the releases of live action The Lion King and The Lady and The Tramp later this year. But who knows what’s next for Disney once the company finally remakes all of their famous animated films. Maybe they will have to start adapting the less popular ones.
