In a recent report, Lionsgate has revealed a $94 million quarterly loss for the first half of 2025. This loss comes from a period of change for Lionsgate, with the company announcing its separation of its main studio and Starz businesses in May. Much of the loss stems from the box office disappointment of Ballerina, with the John Wick spin-off film, which starred Ana De Armas, ending its total worldwide box office with $132.4 million off an estimated budget of $90 million. Another Simple Favor, which Lionsgate co-produced with Amazon MGM Studios, and which was released on Prime Video in May, is also said to have disappointed in its earnings on streaming.
It’s yet to be seen whether Lionsgate’s profits will improve during the second half of 2025, which includes the release of The Strangers: Chapter Two and the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk. Lionsgate also recently began production on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which could be a big movie for 2026, considering the best-selling source material and its ties to The Hunger Games franchise, whose previous five installments have made the studio a total collective worldwide box office of over $1.6 billion. Lionsgate could also find success the following year with the two-part sequel to The Passion of the Christ, which grossed $612 million when it was released in 2004. Both parts of the sequel, titled The Resurrection of Christ, are set to release in 2027.
