“City of stars…are you shining just for me?” The lyrics to La La Land‘s Oscar-winning song “City of Stars” will soon take a more literal tune as Lionsgate has announced the launch of a worldwide concert tour in conjunction with the film set to make its world premiere at the historic Hollywood Bowl. “La La Land in Concert: A Live-to-Film Celebration” will play the Bowl on Friday, May 26th and Saturday, May 27th. The event will feature composer Justin Hurwitz conducting his Oscar-winning score live-to-film before a 100-piece symphony orchestra, choir, and jazz ensemble with the accompaniment of the film’s original vocal recordings.
Damien Chazelle, who won an Oscar for directing the film, noted of the concert event: “For me, one of the most thrilling and fulfilling parts of making La La Land was scoring the film to a live orchestra: a hundred phenomenal local musicians playing in real-time to the Technicolor images, bringing Justin’s compositions to vivid life. I couldn’t be more excited to share that experience with audiences this summer, let alone in a setting as epic and as quintessentially ‘LA’ as the Hollywood Bowl.”
Following its premiere at the Hollywood Bowl, “La La Land in Concert: A Live-to-Film Celebration” will travel around the globe with stops expected U.S. cities that include Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Antonio, Dallas, Indianapolis, Nashville, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Denver, and Washington, D.C. Internationally, the concert will travel to the U.K., Canada, Mexico, Italy, Turkey, and Switzerland with additional stops to later to be confirmed.
With La La Land‘s nod to old-school Hollywood magic, Lionsgate is encouraged patrons of the event to dress in vintage Hollywood attire as well as participate in custom pre-show photo opportunities. The event at the Hollywood Bowl will include fireworks as well.
Hurwitz, who won Oscars for both scoring the film as well as penning the music to “City of Stars,” noted, “Damien made a beautiful tribute to Los Angeles with La La Land, and I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the film’s music at an LA landmark with incredible LA musicians.” While Oscar-winning “City of Stars” lyricists Benj Pasek & Justin Paul commented, “We could not be more excited about what will be the first live orchestral presentation of La La Land. And what better place to do it than at the magically dreamy Hollywood Bowl? We’re thrilled about this exciting next chapter of the movie’s life.”
La La Land picked up 6 Academy Awards last week – even as it missed out on a widely expected Best Picture win in a dramatic final twist – and has been an unexpected sleeper at the box office since hitting theaters in early December. The film has earned upwards of $145 million at the domestic box office and nearly $400 million worldwide.
Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl event will go on sale on March 10th. Once on sale, tickets for the performances on May 26th and May 27th can be purchased via Ticketmaster.
